PrivacyGuard Release Notes Version 0.9.1.1 - 08/20/2015 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PrivacyGuard incorporates Privoxy as the default system-wide proxy (localhost:8118). You can fine-tune the proxy settings to increase your anonymity by adding an option for Tor (localhost:9050) to the included Firefox's Proxy Selector extension to switch between Privoxy and Tor. If you want to chain these two proxies together for enhanced anonymity, uncomment the socks5 forward option at C:\Program Files (x86)\Privoxy\config.txt (e.g., #forward-socks5 / 127.0.0.1:9050 . --> forward-socks5 / 127.0.0.1:9050 .). The following summarizes PrivacyGuard's automated software installation: 1. Java Runtime is prerequisite software needed for the Jitsi communicator. 2. Jitsi is a secure VoIP, videoconferencing, and instant messaging application. 3. Mozilla Firefox is a secure web browser that uses a sandbox security model, limits scripts from accessing data, and has fewer security vulnerabilities when compared to other browsers. 4. Mozilla Thunderbird is a secure email, news, and chat client, which provides enterprise-class, military-grade security options for connections to IMAP and SMTP email servers. 5. Privoxy is a non-caching proxy server with filtering capabilities for enhancing privacy by modifying web page data and HTTP headers before the page is rendered by the browser. Privoxy is a "privacy enhancing proxy," filtering web pages and removing annoying, bandwidth-consuming advertisements. 6. Vidalia is a GUI for controlling Tor. It allows the user to start, stop, and view the status of Tor; monitor bandwidth usage; view, filter, and search log messages; and configure certain aspects of Tor. Vidalia also makes it easier to contribute to the Tor network by optionally helping the user set up a Tor relay. Another prominent feature of Vidalia is its Tor network map, which lets the user see the geographic location of relays on the Tor network, as well as where the user's application traffic is going. 7. Tor is software for enabling online anonymity. It works by directing Internet traffic through a free, worldwide network consisting of thousands of relays to conceal a user's location or usage from anyone conducting network surveillance or traffic analysis. Using Tor makes it more difficult to trace Internet activity, including visits to web sites, online posts, instant messages, and other forms of communication, back to the user. Tor is intended to protect the personal privacy of users, as well as their freedom and ability to conduct confidential business by keeping their Internet activities from being monitored. 8. Gpg4win is prerequisite software needed for Mozilla Thunderbird's Enigmail extension, and provides software tools and manuals for email and file encryption. The software uses public-key cryptography for data encryption and digital signatures. 9. Enigmail is a data encryption and decryption extension for Mozilla Thunderbird that provides OpenPGP public key email encryption and signing. Its cryptographic functionality is handled by GNU Privacy Guard. Browse the documentation at https://www.enigmail.net/documentation/quickstart- ch2.php for step-by-step instructions on configuring this Enigmail extension. 10. Proxy Selector is an extension for Mozilla Firefox that lets you switch between proxies. This extension will allow you to use the default Privoxy system-wide proxy for your general Internet usage, and then quickly switch over to Tor for maximum anonymity. 11. HTTPS Everywhere is an extension for Mozilla Firefox that prevents attackers from intercepting network traffic. This security enhancing extension works by automatically replacing HTTP requests with secure HTTPS requests, if the web server supports the latter option.
